This article is the introduction to a Special Issue on policy mixes in Energy Research and Social Science. It explains why policy mixes are important for energy transitions and discusses the various ways the concept can be defined. After setting out the aims of the special issue, the chapter identifies five themes of policy mixes research and groups the fifteen contributions into these five themes. The chapter concludes by discussing some overarching reflections on the most important research implications derived from the emerging academic work on policy mixes for energy transitions and implications for policy mix studies more generally.
